We know activism and archiving can feel overwhelming — so we meet you where you are.
Once you sign up, you’ll be invited into our Slack community. There, you’ll meet your Onboarding Buddy and receive a Digital Welcome Packet with everything you need to get started.
You’ll be introduced to our Movement Manifesto, Code of Conduct, and Slack best practices.
We’ll also share a quick overview of guerilla archiving and why this work is urgent.
After you’ve settled in, we’ll invite you to complete a Skills & Interest Form. This helps us connect you to the right projects, whether that’s scanning records, collecting oral histories, fundraising, or helping organize local events.
With your interests in mind, we’ll plug you into a team, project, or local effort.
Don’t worry — you’ll always have support from your buddy and community leads as you get started.
Preserving history isn’t just important — it’s urgent. With less than two months before major federal changes threaten cultural memory, we need your skills, your passion, and your energy.
How much time do I need to commit?
It’s up to you. Some volunteers help just a few hours a month; others take on ongoing roles. We’ll match you with opportunities that fit your availability and interest.
Can I volunteer remotely?
Yes! Many roles — like data entry, transcription, design, tech development, or outreach — can be done from anywhere. Fieldwork deployments are available for those who want to be hands-on in archives, cemeteries, or museums.
What if I only want to help occasionally?
That’s fine. You can support by spreading awareness, hosting a local info session, or connecting us with funders or institutions. Every action matters.
What skills are you looking for most?
We need:
Tech & Creative (developers, designers, data scientists)
Archiving & Research (archivists, genealogists, historians)
Community Builders (fundraisers, outreach leaders, organizers)
Hands-On Volunteers (digitizing records, documenting cemeteries, capturing oral histories)
What’s the onboarding process like?
We’ll walk you through it step by step:
Welcome call to get to know you.
Orientation to introduce our programs and values.
Choose your path — from fieldwork to digital support.
Ongoing training & mentorship to help you grow in the role.
What’s the impact of my volunteering?
Every volunteer helps ensure Black history — especially intersectional stories of women, LGBTQ+ people, and people with disabilities — is preserved and accessible. Your work could reconnect families, protect cultural memory, or inspire the next generation.
